With special devices you put on your head, obviously. :)
These machines are usually used in our giant robots, because one human brain can't pilot them solo. It'd be too much on the mind, they'd be neurologically damaged doing it by themselves. So a system was created so that two minds could pilot the robot together. They connect. Share each other's thoughts, feelings, memories. It helps them pilot in unison.
I just used that method for, uh
looking through an alien's memories for information.
Only twice, for the record. The first time, I made the mistake of drifting alone. But I'm good now.
The second time, I did it right. Had a secondary drifter, too, so the drift itself didn't overwhelm to the point of severe symptoms. That's when we got the information we needed and relayed it to our team. Totally the last piece of the puzzle in taking down the kaiju.
Maybe you should talk to the doctor about it, though. Just in case. Everything you explained, all of that going wrong, it sounds serious.
[ It sounds long term. But, hell, maybe Newton's already talked with McCoy or something. Maybe he's got it handled. Finn doesn't know! Finn just worries! ]

[ It doesn't sound healthy in the "normal" way, and this is from a guy that has done this without the need for a machine to get involved. ]

Nah probably not, I almost died the first time.
But wouldn't you take that risk, if it meant stopping the destruction of humankind?

[ NEWTON ]
Well. Yes. Of course. But. How many times did you do this?

Wait, go back, severe symptoms? Are you okay?

Finn, you're doing that thing where you worry too much.
I had some issues AFTER that first drift, back then. Unrelated to now.
I'm good now.
[Or so the precursors like to whisper to him, under the surface of his thoughts.]

Okay

But I will.
You just focus on getting whatever info you can from the giant sentient castle, huh?
